A Monthly News Update From the St. Margaret's Campus

Vol. 11, No. 4 Tappahannock, Virginia, November 2008

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Dear St. Margaret's friends and families,

Margaret Robinson Broad - Head of School Every year I marvel at how much happens in the first three months of the school year. Already we have lined up twice behind the bagpiper to process to St. John’s Church, and today, St. Margaret’s Day, it is clear that we are no longer the newly forming classes we were on opening day. We have become so much more! Looking back over the long line of students behind me, I remember other years, other processions, other girls, all joined by this tradition that stretches even further back to tie us to Queen Margaret of Scotland, a daring woman in her day who, like today’s students, left the security and comfort of her own home to reach out to others. With gratitude we look back at her example.

Already this month, in dance, song, games, prayer, words, actions and an unbelievable number and variety of photographs, we have become the St. Margaret’s School community of 2008, distinguished on the outside by our tartan kilts and on the inside by our commitment to the Honor Code and our own growth as individuals living in this close community. We all know that our strengths provide us with unanticipated opportunities and each choice holds a lesson. A quick click through our web site will show you how this looks!

November holds traditions that mark our heritage, reminding us of the legacies of those who have gone before us and challenging us to commit ourselves anew to our own missions of growth and service. With All Saints’ Day beginning the month, St. Margaret’s Day in the middle, and Thanksgiving at the end, we appreciate opportunities for celebration and reflection in our school community and with our families.

In our last all-school chapel, the junior class used their theme of gratitude to remind us that Thanksgiving is the time set aside each year when we all pause to express appreciation for what we have been given. What better time to reflect on the enduring gifts of a St. Margaret’s School education!

Sincerely,
Margaret R. Broad,
Head of School
