Friday, June 3 & Saturday, June 4


Dear St. Margaret’s families,

You are cordially invited for Commencement Weekend events highlighting an outstanding year for our St. Margaret’s students. The events begin Friday afternoon, June 3, 2011. This letter contains information about each event and includes a reply form for the Academic Awards Banquet and an end of year vacation form to be completed and returned. All students are expected and all families are encouraged to attend all scheduled events, except the senior reception which is only for seniors and their families. All boarding students remain on campus after dinner Friday night until after Commencement.

Friday, June 3

The Academic Awards Dinner is a highlight of the school year. It is with great pride that we announce excellence, achievement, and honor society awards, as well as recognition awards from colleges. We think you will enjoy sharing our excitement on this last evening together this year.

All students are required to attend the dinner. Two adults in the student’s family may attend the dinner at no charge. Other family members may attend at a charge of $12 per person. Children under 10 may also attend at no charge. All attending must make reservations on the enclosed reservation form and make payment by check in advance. Saturday, June 4

Reserved seating for Commencement is limited and is available for senior families and their guests. Each senior will receive 5 tickets for reserved seating. She may use these or give them to anyone she chooses. Tickets must be presented for reserved seating. Underclasswomen and faculty will be seated to the left and right of the graduation platform. Other parents and guests may sit in limited additional seating behind the reserved area or may bring lawn chairs or be prepared to stand.

Following Commencement, refreshments will be served on the front lawn.





Weekend Schedule
Friday, June 3
4:00 pm Head of School’s reception for seniors and their families – Chinn House Water Lane
5:00 pm Baccalaureate Service for the school community and guests, St. John’s Church. Seating will be available in the sanctuary and in the parish hall. Students should wear white dresses and white shoes. (Flip flops are not permissible)
6:00 pm Academic Awards Banquet for the school community and guests
Saturday, June 4
8:00 am Communion Service in the Chapel –note: change in location (not a required event)
8:45 am Breakfast will be served in the dining room
9:30 am Senior Class picture on the front steps of SMS Hall
10:00 am Commencement on the River Lawn. All students should wear white dresses and white shoes. (Flip flops are not permissible)

Guidelines for Commencement Weekend 2011
Guests

For Commencement weekend we welcome families to campus.   Only seniors may have guests other than family and should follow the procedure for signing in guests at the School Life Office in Latane Dormitory.    Girls should check with Mr. Krusz or their dormitory head if they have questions.   Please remember that guests and family members are not permitted to stay in the dormitory.

Travel Plans

The School will provide transportation to the Richmond Airport and the Richmond train station and will work with our transportation service to arrange transportation to Dulles and Reagan National airports.   Transportation to Dulles and Reagan National probably will not arrive at the airport before 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.   Please schedule your student’s reservations for flights home accordingly.   All parents/guardians should fax or mail the Vacation Leave Form to Keith Krusz or follow the process to submit the online form via the SMS website by Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Friday, June 3, 2011

The foreign language exam will be held Friday morning until 11:45.   After students have completed all of their commitments, including cleaning their rooms and packing their belongings, they may sign out with their parents for lunch or other places in town between 12:30 and 3:30.   Day leaves will not be permitted.  The pool and waterfront will be open from 1:00 – 3:30.   No one may sign out after 3:30 p.m.  

Head of School’s reception for seniors and their families at 4:00 p.m.– Chinn House, Water Lane.  

All students must attend the Baccalaureate Service at 5:00 p.m. in their white dresses and white shoes. (Flip flops are not permissible)   

The Academic Awards dinner will be held in the gymnasium immediately following the Baccalaureate service - you should make a reservation for this event.   All boarding students remain on campus after dinner until after Commencement.

Saturday, June 4, 2011

Students may not sign out on Saturday morning before Commencement.   After a dorm parent has completed a final room inspection, and the student has returned her room key and fob, the student will be permitted to sign out for summer vacation after Commencement.   Remember that the final inspection will determine if there is any room or furniture damage that will result in a charge to the student’s account.
